Lucky 7?

BY: Stacey Gerhart

We are down to the final seven games in the regular season and while most teams are making the final push for a playoff spot, the Avs are barely hanging on to 8th place in the Western Conference.
Unfortunately, our last seven match-ups are all against fellow Western Conference teams – most of which are heavy competitors for a playoff berth (with the exception of Edmonton). San Jose, Phoenix, and Chicago have all already clinched a playoff spot, while Vancouver, Nashville, Detroit, LA, and Colorado all fight to hold onto their current positions. Right now Colorado sits two points behind Detroit, one point behind LA, and just a few points ahead of Calgary.
While teams like Detroit continue to push forward with a current 5-game winning streak, the Avs seem to be headed in the opposite direction – they are currently on a 2-game losing streak.
Saturday’s game against Phoenix seemed like a pretty good match until the Avs let the Coyotes score three unanswered goals in the third period, bringing the final score to 6-2. And the Avs tried really hard to hold on during their game against the Sharks on Sunday but the points that the Avs so desperately needed slipped away with a 4-3 loss.
The Calgary Flames are knocking at the back door and right now the Avs are playing gracious hosts and opening the door right up to welcome them in – this is unacceptable – especially since the Flames will be visiting the Pepsi Center this Friday in a much anticipated battle.
Our only advantage over Calgary at this point is that they have one less game to play during the regular season – but it really won’t matter if the Avs continue their losing streak.
I’m hoping that these last seven games will be our lucky seven. I’m hoping that the Avs can turn a corner, figure out their current faults and problems, and sweep the rest of the season! Here’s to luck.
